Cote worked for years as an engineer at two Silicon Valley startups. Both were sold to bigger companies and Cote made hundreds of thousands of dollars from the sales. At the time, he planned to use particularly the second sale for college funds for his daughters, who were then 12 and The rest could go to retirement. Then, in , he found out both his teenage daughters were using drugs. They would ultimately grapple with addictions to opioids and meth, with treatment draining those potential college funds and retirement savings.
But we had to keep trying. Walled off from the rest of the American health care system, the rehab industry has failed to meet the same standards as other medical providers. Unlike many costly treatments, studies have found that medication can be effective in helping patients overcome addiction. Both daughters are now in recovery: the older for more than two years and the younger since early Michel is not alone.
Among the many responses, there are success stories that make clear that recovery from addiction is possible. Treatment, when evidence-focused and accessible , can help. Experts say there are a few markers that set good treatment centers apart from bad ones. Providers should offer comprehensive care — not just for addiction, but other physical and mental health conditions as well.

They should offer medications, such as buprenorphine or methadone for opioid addiction or naltrexone for either alcohol or opioids. Patients should not be kicked out merely for relapsing. Treatment centers should have licensed medical professionals on staff and, ideally, be linked to a bigger health care system. With help from experts, Vox put together a list of what to look for in addiction treatment. Yet the difference between picking the right facility and the wrong one can be life or death.
The school called Michel to their office.
As he waited, he got another call: His daughter had been caught with drugs, and he needed to come to the school right away. Danika, then 13, got caught on the same day. There were problems at home and school, and she was bullied. Medical detox is essential for drugs like alcohol and benzodiazepines, which are associated with withdrawal syndromes that may bring on seizures. Inpatient medical detox is also common for opioid withdrawal, which may be very painful. An outpatient treatment program can be an important next step in the recovery process as you work to improve your personal health and maintain your sobriety.
There are varying levels of outpatient treatment depending on the level of care the patient needs. Some outpatient programs may involve several hours of therapy per day while others might require varying amounts of time throughout the week.

Browse Featured Rehabs. Edited By Kindra Sclar, M. Thinking About Getting Rehab? A typical day at an inpatient facility might include: Group therapy sessions. Individual therapy sessions. Educational lectures. These statistics are a story of preventable tragedy. After 20 years doing this work, I know that it can affect any one of us, nobody is immune. So what can we do? First, we all need access to reliable information to help us make safer decisions.
Where are the ingredients sourced, have they got a history of making people sick?
Services on Demand
At the moment, people who want to use drugs have very little to help them make safer choices. There is something we can do to protect the roughly three million people who use drugs in the UK every year. We can offer testing facilities for pills and powders — The Loop does this at festivals — so that people can find out what contaminants might be in their drugs, and crucially, how strong the drugs are. This reduces the risk for everyone, regardless of the substance they choose. Second, we all need access at some time or another to safe and non-judgmental advice.
We can fix that by modernising the way people access services. Asking people to show up in person is an important part of what treatment services do, but this model makes it hard to reach everyone. We have a lot more to do to provide safe places online for advice and support. Third, when people do develop problems with drugs or alcohol, it should be treated as a health issue, rather than a criminal justice one.
Lots of countries are starting to think differently about drugs. Taking a health-based approach, rather than putting people in prison, makes sense for everyone. And finally, there will always be those who need intensive support.
